From the series Cuidado comunal, radical y liberación, 2023
The series Cuidado comunal, radical y liberación shows Afro-Caribbean women relaxing and enjoying outdoor spaces in the former Canal Zone (Panama), places where they were often denied access. Inspired by Sue Core’s book *Maid in Panama*, the women in these images challenge the colonial views of the time, which exoticized and mocked their customs and lifestyles. The series questions how Afro-Caribbean women were represented in the photographic archives at the Panama Canal Museum, exploring how they were observed and criticized by white American women and the limits placed on their access to public spaces.
